Administration

In 2009 I acted as an advisor to Mothers against Violence, a charity set up in Manchester to reduce deaths from crime in the city. They have produced a Christmas card “Last Christmas”, containing a very strong anti-knife crime message warning vulnerable youngsters of the dangers of carrying such weapons.

A collaborative study with Julian Hatcher and Lee Herrington, Senior Lecturers in Sport (Sports Rehabilitation & Applied Sports Science) University of Salford: A controlled clinical trial to examine the effects of chronic ACL deficiency on proprioception using the Star Excursion Balance Test was presented at the 13th Commonwealth International Sports Conference, Melbourne, March, 2006 and published in The Knee in 2009.

In 2001 I secured approximately £550,000 funding for an Audit Nurse and Fellow to prospectively audit all knee and selected hip arthroplasties carried out in the our Unit, to improve quality assurance by objective independent patient review. Unfortunately this audit has been discontinued during the latter part of 2009. The data collected in it is being transferred to our in-house arthroplasty audit to enable continued prospective surveillance of this cohort.

I ran the Warrington Knee Fellowship from 2002 to 2007 and have supervised the Fellows to produce many presentations and a number of peer reviewed publications are in press or published. The first Fellow, James Arbuthnot was appointed to the Birmingham SpR Rotation and in November 2009 as a consultant knee surgeon at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Gareth Stables and Manickam Rathinam have been appointed to the Merseyside SpR Rotation and Yioannis Pengas is on the Pott’s rotation in London, and Paul Meyers was my last Knee Fellow decided to persue a career as a General Practitioner, with an interest in sports medicine, due to the current difficulties in gaining entry to higher surgical training in Orthopaedics. He is in practice in Perth, Scotland. A number of my trainees have gone on to be appointed as Consultants with a special interest in knee surgery.

In 2008, I was invited, by the University of Salford, to participate in a steering group to set up a Postgraduate diploma in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, the first students started in 2009 and I will be lecturing in the knee module in 2010.
