The McNicholas Knee clinic aims to return quality of life to its patients as comfortably and quickly as their underlying problems will allow. If non-operative means fail, then interventions using the most upto date surgical and anaesthetic techniques followed by bespoke rehabilitation protocols are utilized.

Michael McNicholas was trained in St Andrews, Manchester, Dundee, Inverness and Edinburgh and was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon in 2001 to Warrington Hospital.

Mr Michael McNicholas has had an interest in sports medicine throughout his career. This was recognised in 2004 by his election, without examination, as a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Excercise Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He was awarded an Honorary Professorship in January 2005 by the Directorate of Sport at the University of Salford in recognition of continued successful collaborations in research and teaching on the rehabilitation of injured sportsmen and women.

Honorary Professor McNicholas’s clinical practice covers all aspects of adult musculoskeletal disorder with particular emphasis on knee surgery, arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction and articular cartilage repair of the knee, sports injuries and knee joint replacement.

Michael McNicholas is involved in international collaborative clinical and basic science research, mainly related to knee disorders and has won awards for this. He is a member of international collaborative studies comparing different techniques of articular cartilage resurfacing, the ACTIVE Trial (additional reading) and the SUMMIT Trial (additional reading) and has also studied outcomes of meniscus repair, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, multiple ligament reconstruction, hip and knee replacements, including their effect on return to golfing.

Mr McNicholas regularly teaches on courses for orthopaedic surgeons in trauma surgery, arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction of the knee and knee replacement surgery.

Dr Mark Caplan

Dr Mark Caplan qualified in 1984 at Liverpool University Medical School and specialised in the field of radiology. He gained the Diploma of Medical Radiodiagnosis (London) in 1993 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1994. He developed a sub-specialist interest in ultrasound and MRI scanning with specific expertise in musculo-skeletal disorders and sports injury. He was appointed as Consultant Radiologist at North Cheshire Hospital in 1996 and works closely with Mr McNicholas, assisting in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of orthopaedic disorders.

Mark has published research papers in spinal, limb and sports injury disorders and continues to be involved in clinical research. He provides lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees and at international conferences. Mark is committed to providing his patients with the highest standards of care using modern radiological techniques in the investigation of orthopaedic disorders and sports injury.

Dr Mark Forrest

Dr Mark Forrest qualified in 1988 at Liverpool University Medical School. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and has specialist training in Anaesthetics and Critical Care Medicine.  He was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospital Aintree, in Liverpool in 1997 then in 2001 he moved to North Cheshire Hospital, Warrington, where he developed his considerable interest in trauma and critical care anaesthesia.

www.atacc.net Mark has written a number of Nationally recognised courses and lectures Internationally in anaesthesia and intensive care. He has introduced Human Patient Simulation to the Region, which is now used extensively to promote greater safety in resuscitation and anaesthesia.

Dr Forrest has a wealth of experience in all aspects of general and regional anaesthesia, including spinal, epidural and peripheral nerve blocks for post-operative pain relief. Mark works closely with Mike and the team to develop the best techniques for the greatest patient satisfaction, safety and rapid recovery.
