Ruptured Extensor Mechanism

The extensor mechanism of the knee is made up of the ligament, joining the shinbone to the knee cap (ligamentum patella); the knee cap (patella); and the tendon joining the knee cap to the muscles on the front of the thigh (quadriceps tendon). These tissues can be torn or the knee cap broken in falls or during sport. They usually need an operation to allow return to function.
